The research core area „Molecular Biomedicine“ integrates a number of inter-university research activities of high biomedical relevance:

  • Molecular aging research
  • Molecular metabolism research
  • Infection biology and the development of novel antibiotics
  • Microbiome and genome research
  • Tumor biology
  • Neurodegenerative diseases

We emphasize basic research with a focus on translational applications of highest biomedical relevance, for diagnosis and the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Close interdisciplinary interaction generates significant added value to address highly complex biological processes and provides access to a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and scientific expertise.
The scientific excellence of the core research area is documented by an outstanding publication record, the conduction of local, national and international large-scale research networks and the acquisition of substantial research funding by national and international agencies, and industry.
The specific strategic goals of the core research area Molecular Biomedicine in the framework of BioTechMed-Graz are as follows:

  • Competitive top-level research within the above-mentioned research areas through innovative approaches and extended trans-disciplinary networking
  • Enhanced international visibility through top-level publications
  • Continuous upgrade and development of state-of-the-art research infrastructure and implementation of advanced key technologies, also in close cooperation with companies
  • Fostering of a creative and innovative environment for researchers at all levels of scientific development; investment in educational and post-graduate training programs, and optimizing the organizational framework for acquisition of FWF-START or ERC projects.
