Faculty Club

Begin of page section: Contents:

The BioTechMed-Graz Faculty Club offers a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and networking to all full and associated members of BioTechMed-Graz in the form of "casual evenings". Additionally to these "casual evenings", the event series includes "BioTechMed-Graz Flagship Lectures". The Faculty Club takes place on the third Wednesday of every month at 5.00 p.m. at the "Mensa Rooftop" of TU Graz, Stremayrgasse 16, 5th floor.

Current event

On 21.09.2022 at 5 pm the internationally renowned metabolism expert Prof. Dr. Markus Ralser, Director of the Institute, Group Leader Biochemistry and Systembiology of Metabolism, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, will hold a Flagship Lecture at HS BMT (Stremayrgasse 16, TU Graz) on the topic "Evolution and system-scale nature of metabolism".

You can register here for the event until September 19th.

Evolution and system-scale nature of metabolism

Life runs on many thousands of different chemical reactions, known collectively as cell metabolism. Metabolic reactions are vital for keeping cells and organisms growing and alive, and problems with cellular metabolism are implicated in ageing and diseases such as cancer, diabetes and brain disorders. Rather than thinking about cell metabolism as a collection of individual reactions, we are working to understand metabolism as a dynamic, interconnected network of processes that adapts in response to changes and stresses in the environment, and that evolves and functions as an entity.

In his lecture, Markus Ralser will summarize the efforts of conducting hundreds to thousands of analytical measurements at both proteome and metabolome, allowing him and his team to study how these complex metabolic processes are controlled, and how they are reconfigured in response to environmental changes. By taking detailed precision measurements of the genes and molecules involved in metabolic processes and putting the data into computer analysis programmes, it can be traced how the cell’s metabolism adapts and changes in response to various stresses and strains. And it can also be seen what happens when crucial parts of the system are altered or faulty, as a model for human diseases, as well as derive the very basic principles of metabolism, like the ones that enabled its origin in early evolution.

Past Events:

On 22.06.2022 at 5 pm the Facutly Club took place in the form of an Open Evening at TU Graz Rooftop Mensa before summer break. This served the interdisciplinary exchange of all BioTechMed-Graz members and offered them a platform for networking.

On 25.05.2022 at 5 pm at Prof. Dr. Jürgen Knoblich, Scientific Director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the ÖAW held a Flagship Lecture at HS BMT (Stremayrgasse 16, TU Graz) about "Analyzing human brain disorders in stem cell-derived organoid cultures" (Abstract)

On 20.04.2022 at 5 pm the Facutly Club was held in the form of an Open Evening at TU Graz Rooftop Mensa. This served the interdisciplinary exchange of all BioTechMed-Graz members and offered them a platform for networking.
The first Faculty Club with a Flagship Lecture of 2022 took place on March 30th at 5:00 pm. Dr. Günter Weiss from the Medical University of Innsbruck, Department of Internal Medicine gave a lecture on "Regulatory interactions between iron homeostasis, immunity and infection control". Afterwards, there was a small Get-Together with a buffet in the Rooftop Mensa.
