About the Speaker:

Hrvoje Bogunović is a computer scientist and an expert in the AI-assisted analysis of medical imaging data, with a particular focus on ophthalmology from the Medical University of Vienna. He is an associate professor at the research laboratory called “Christian Doppler Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Retina”. 

Abstract: Ophthalmology and the eye are at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in medicine, including the first fully autonomous FDA-approved diagnostic system in all of medicine. AI is rapidly transforming retinal imaging into a powerful platform for predictive, personalized, and accessible healthcare. This talk will explore three key aspects shaping this transformation. First, we will examine how AI-driven clinical decision support systems are enhancing the monitoring, and management of retinal diseases, enabling more standardized and efficient care.  Second, using the paradigm of “eye as a window to the body” we move beyond the retinal diseases to highlight the emerging field of oculomics, where retinal images serve as biomarkers for systemic health. Finally, we discuss how these advances extend beyond traditional hospital settings, enabling community-based screening and decentralized care. Together, these developments illustrate how AI and retinal imaging are redefining healthcare from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.
